Motorway vignettes

Motorway vignettes are a form of toll for using motorways and expressways in some countries. Instead of paying tolls on specific sections (as with toll gates), drivers purchase a vignette for a specific period of time—for example, a day, a week, a month, or a year.

Vignettes can take various forms:

  • Stickers – stuck to the vehicle window (e.g. in Switzerland)
  • Electronic – linked to the vehicle registration number (e-Vignette)

Failure to issue a valid vignette during a check may result in a hefty fine. The vignette system applies in the following countries:

Vignettes in the Czech Republic

The electronic vignette requirement applies to motor vehicles with at least four wheels and a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tons. Trailers and motorcycles are exempt from this requirement. Additionally, fully electric vehicles are exempt from the fee upon notification.

Vignettes in Slovakia

In Slovakia, vignettes are required for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVM) of up to 3.5 tonnes, i.e. mainly passenger cars, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles.

A vignette is mandatory on motorways and expressways marked "D" and "R." A full list of toll sections can be found on the official website of the Slovak vignette system.

Failure to display a valid vignette can result in a fine of up to €500. The system works electronically – cameras scan license plates and check them against a database.

Vignettes in Austria

Vignettes are mandatory for vehicles with a GVM of up to 3.5 tonnes (passenger cars, motorcycles, light commercial vehicles) on motorways and expressways marked with the letters "A" and "S".

Failure to pay a valid vignette will result in a fine ranging from €120 (if paid on the spot) to €300-3,000 in the event of an administrative fine. The camera system automatically checks vehicles.

In Hungary, vignettes are mandatory for vehicles with a GVM of up to 3.5 tonnes (passenger cars, motorcycles, light commercial vehicles) on motorways and expressways marked with the letter "M".

Vignettes in Slovenia

When entering a toll road, every motor vehicle with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tons must display a valid e-vignette of the appropriate class. This means that the e-vignette must be paid before entering the motorway or expressway. Motorcycles receive cheaper vignettes than passenger cars.

Connecting Slovenia and Austria, the Karavanke Tunnel is 7,864 meters long, making it the longest road tunnel in the Republic of Slovenia. It is not subject to e-vignette payment, meaning that a toll must be paid each time it is used.

Vignettes in Switzerland

Vignettes are mandatory for all vehicles with a GVM of up to 3.5 tonnes (passenger cars, motorcycles, campers) on motorways and expressways marked with "A" numbers.

The official Swiss highway toll sticker is valid for 14 months. It begins on December 1st of the previous year and ends on January 31st of the following year. Switzerland only offers a one-year sticker. There are no short-term stickers (e.g., weekly or monthly).

The cost of an annual vignette for a motorcycle, car or trailer is CHF 40.00.

From 2023, two types of vignettes are available:

  • Traditional (sticky) – stuck on the windshield, available at gas stations, post offices and borders.
  • Electronic (E-Vignette) – assigned to the registration number, available for purchase online on the official website

Vignettes, also known as "Rovinietas," are mandatory for all vehicles, regardless of weight, on national roads and highways. This requirement also applies to tourists and transit vehicles.
